This was our second year running the Kent Schools Ski Championships, and it ran even better than the last! With the new venue, Chatham Ski Slope now available for us to use we decided to move the competition. The slope is in excellent condition with a diverse gradient and more terrain to make the race more exciting. We had a similar number of competitors to last year, even with some new schools and skiers participating.
The day of the race was perfect sunshine, ideal for the spectators and luckily the slope have a brilliant misting system that enabled the speed for the skiers to run at a good pace. With an ambitious schedule the skiers arrived bright and early Sunday morning and began open practice. With the skiers warming up we had our team captain's meeting where we had an abundance of volunteers (very much appreciated). After the team captains meeting, the course was set by Precise Racing and inspected carefully by the competitors. At 10.20, on the dot, racer number 1 left the start gate and kicked off the first run of the special slalom. The two runs ran smoothly with some first-time racers tackling the nerves. As we came to an end of the special slalom the race the day was not yet over. Whilst we changed the format of the course and set, one red and one blue course adjacent to each other, the computer was working out the teams evenly according to the skier's slalom runs in the morning. First to race were the primary school racers who skied through stubbies, followed by the Secondary racers who skied through full gates. Once the dual slalom races had whittled their way down resulting with the best Primary and Secondary teams, as a Kent Schools ritual we decided to team up the fastest 5 female and fastest 5 male competitors of the day and have a final race! The atmosphere was incredible with the crowd in utter silence awaiting the skiers to be set off. And they're off! The spectators were cheering on the skiers, with the intensity rising even the closeness in the race. As the skiers cross the line, your vision went straight to the top ready for the next set of racers. With an appressed finish, the race was won by 0.45 seconds by the boys!
After the racing had come to an end, it was then time for the award ceremony. We had a huge amount of trophies and medals to give out to all those placing top 3 in their age categories. The event was great fun to organise, very entertaining to watch and we hope to see you all again next year.
